Whatever You Think Your Limits Are, You’re Wrong
The Third Rule of the Artist’s Journey is:
If you imagine you know your limits, you’re mistaken.
I have a recurring dream. I’m moving through my house and I discover a room I’ve never seen before. Sometimes I’ll find an entire wing. I’ll stumble onto billiard rooms and libraries and great, candlelit ballrooms filled with revelers.
Those rooms are parts of myself that I didn’t know existed.
You have those rooms too.
All of us contain mansions and galleries and gardens that we’ve never encountered, that we had no idea existed.
Those places are where we create from.
If you think you know what you’re good at, think again. Trust me: you can do stuff you’ve never even dreamed of.
There are rooms and more rooms in our house, and more rooms after that.

Wicked good post! Thank you Mr P.
Just the message I needed to hear today as I struggle with writing out the right questions for an interview someone will give me for my documentary film. It’s my first one and I need to think in a new way, to create my narration of a film thats not close to being finished where my narration will come from my answers in this interview
New territory
New rooms in house to enter breathing deeply and trusting the process, super scary to enter unknown rooms.
Thank you! I just feel like I just opened the Vault after reading this.
Thank you with all my heart.
Thanks for all you do. You are amazing.
Why won’t this damn door open? I need out of here. Where are the lights? What is that noise?
Confirmed: I am a Sprewling Castle full of ancient armor, store-rooms full of grain, Battlements, a drawbridge, stables, a dungeon ( where bad memories have been condemned), and my banner floats from the highest tower when I am “In Residence”.There are cooks and housekeepers, servants for everything I need, and I am QUEEN. Thanks for reminding me of my status, Steven, I needed that! Happy Wednesday👑
Steve, this is one of your very best short inspirational posts. Thank you.
So true as I have discovered! Thanks for all you do Steven, you are one of my stars. That podcast you just did with Mark Manson was brilliant, thanks for that, it’s good to hear your voice because you are living it so I’m getting a lot by osmosis ❤️
Resistance has invaded my house. This post is just what I needed to sweep it clean. It reminded me of a time when I would get up at 5 am to write before the day job at 9. Then the company moved our start time to 6 am. I got up at 4 am to write and wrote on my break. I let nothing deter me from my mission. So it must be now. There are many rooms to explore before this old house is boarded up and sold.
Love it ! Just what I needed today – fantastic Mr Pressfield
Thanks for that jolt of inspiration and encouragement.
Oh wow! I have similar dreams. Annexes to my house I forgot were there, sprawling gardens with swimming pools. And regularly properties I have bought and forgotten about that are standing empty. These dreams are so real sometimes on waking I have to really think about whether I did forget that I owned a place (I’m a landlord as it happens). I interpreted these dreams as me having too much on my mind, juggling too many projects…
But I prefer your interpretation!
Thank you Steve.
I love you.
Wait. I love him, too!
Now we’re going to have to have a duel…
And what about Diana?
:)))
Steve, thanks for sharing proof that It’s fabulous to be wrong!
And for being.
Gosh, I really wish I could believe this. It doesn’t seem likely. But I guess I need to trust the Boss and act as if it were true.
Peter
Hmm, mind you upon consideration I do often think and talk about having an underground laboratory, and an extensive armoury (haha). And even a silo where I house an interplanetary spacecraft. Also a library, and a ‘flight deck’. Err, sometimes there’s a kill room too. Perhaps all this is a reflection of hidden depths in one’s creative soul.
Steve, thanks for a thought provoking and highly original post.
Peter
Wow Steve! That was really one of the best inspirational mini stories I have read from you. Greetings from Buenos Aires. I love your work, always give me the energy to keep writing and creating stuff
Wow, I get weird looks whenever I talk about these types of dreams! Same thing happens to me; huge wings, gardens…even a recurring dream from a prior career where I’m walking through what in reality was an ancient, rat-infested locker room, to find cafes, a spa and gym, and strangest of all, people from the entire span of my 20 year career who did not work there at the same time! Thanks so much for this post, Mr. P!
I am finding that to be true as I begin to write my life story. One memory leads to another to another …
OH WOW! I used to have those dreams too. I just shared my experience with them to my ACIM class last week!! Thank you for the validation.
Out of no where
Out of no way
A way will be shown.
I have followed and learned so much from you. Thank you. Leslie
With blurry eyed vision, I need more rooms.
🍃🌸🍃
This post kicked up the dust. I never recall dreams, and have but a couple that replay themselves. But at the gym this morning, I remembered. There were rooms in my house not being used. Behind closed doors, the furniture was covered in sheets. I knew I must clean the rooms to make them usable. I haven’t thought about this vision in some time. Then the muse kept interrupting my workout. I found myself stepping aside to take notes. It was a story I thought incapable of telling. So thanks, Steve.
É verdade somos uma imensidão!
I am moved by the feelings of curiosity and possibility provoked by your post, Steven. Great stuff!
How I hope you’re right!
Thank you for this reminder. I was arguing with myself over the weekend about how often, how long, and how much I can write in a given hour, day, session, etc. I found that I was arguing in favor of limits and keeping myself contained, staying in-line, and not overdoing it. I felt off about it then, I know now that it’s just Resistance…. yet again. Thanks!
Spectacular!
It’s liberating to realize that our ability to positively evolve and change is as much a choice as remaining stagnant and and inert!
AT 91 I still manage to find rooms with the Help of Spell-Check and foresight of Steve Jobs lives are open to what we previously thought impossible …. beware AI which would have us believe it’s all easy Chuck
I needed this today – thank you.
Truly exciting idea. Wow! I must consider opening up what I never even dared hope for; what I was not even aware of. This will require letting go of junk and ways of thinking that I cling to. Make room for the unexpected. Expect the unexpected. Go get it. Inspiring. Thank you, Steven
And the great thing about aging, thinking that you’re finished, too late to the game, and (as resistance tells you) it’s impossible to keep creating now, at this age, is that you discover all those secret rooms, built over decades and stuffed with treasures demanding to be revealed. Thank you for your monumental encouragement for all of us!
I have those repeated dreams too! always in my childhood home and I get so excited to explore them when I encounter them. When I wake up they become the dominant thought of the day and can remember them clearly. By the way Steve, I know we have not met in the flesh yet, but I’ve read the WAR OF ART 12 times throughout my life and prescribe it to my fellow procrastinators and writers blocked artists . my wife even wrote a song about Resistance
I’ve had a dream like this for years and could never make sense of it – finding rooms and rooms I had never seen. It always scared me. I feel a bit relieved to find some understanding about this dream – and that perhaps it is a good dream. I often wake up from this dream exhausted after searching a house with endless rooms. Seeing in this light is helpful. I have always doubted my creativity, so maybe the dream is trying to keep my brain open to possibility, to keep exploring the rooms. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much dear Steve.
We are limitless.
The only question is how to enter, explore and use all those out-of-limit territories.
My life is boring these times. Family matters, certain routines and a struggle to hold on through all troubles and finding a spark of purpose and energy. Many troubles.
A few nights ago I went to a good rock bar with new people. Golden sparks where lighting everywhere in my aesthetics/body, I was spontaneously one of the hearts of the whole group, tastes and beauty would emerge from every partical of the place. My perception was thanking me for being at a dynamic I have completely forgotten, unconcern and aesthetics this time.
There are secret doors that we must find. Behind them are purposes, purposes of all kinds -good and evil or, better said, as Socrates would say, purposes from all walks of life and the world. And being pros means we must seek for those secret doors. We still won’t know a thing, but beyond the mere neutrality of the world there is life, which is all that is positive even if so ephemeral.
The only addition I’d like to add is that, doing our work, we naturally become Ready for many secret doors. Before that, even the most beautiful shape may be only a neutral, indifferent, even harmful body.
Bravo, and thank you
I love it!!
Dear Steven, thank you… I needed this
Bless you
Gotta go deep.
Whatever you think your limits are, you’re wrong. Sometimes, we underestimate our own potential and hold ourselves back. Embracing challenges and pushing beyond what we believe is possible can lead to incredible growth and achievements. So, the next time you feel like giving up or doubting your capabilities, remember that you’re capable of more than you think
Absolutely. It’s amazing how often we underestimate our potential. Pushing beyond our perceived limits can lead to incredible growth and discovery. Embracing challenges can unlock strengths we didn’t even know we had
What an inspiring message! It’s amazing how we often underestimate our potential. Embracing challenges is key to growth. For motivational resources, check out hansenglassinc to fuel your journey even more!
