TK Ths Job N Shove It, Deeper Version

When you and I quit a job—literally or metaphorically—we’re like that fish that first crawled up on dry land. We’re like Rambo or Wonder Woman or Dorothy on the road to Oz.

We have left the Known.

We have entered the Unknown.

In this new world, we must change, not just superficially (in the sense of constructing our home office or setting up a Zoom studio and our own LLC) but on the deepest possible level, the level of the soul.

DO THE WORK

Steve shows you the predictable Resistance points that every writer hits in a work-in-progress and then shows you how to deal with each one of these sticking points. This book shows you how to keep going with your work.

THE AUTHENTIC SWING

A short book about the writing of a first novel: for Steve, The Legend of Bagger Vance. Having failed with three earlier attempts at novels, here's how Steve finally succeeded.

The-Authentic-Swing

NOBODY WANTS TO READ YOUR SH*T

Steve shares his "lessons learned" from the trenches of the five different writing careers—advertising, screenwriting, fiction, nonfiction, and self-help. This is tradecraft. An MFA in Writing in 197 pages.

Steve, you don’t know how much your weekly posts help me on the deeper level. Because they go so deep! To read your messages feels like receiving an encouraging hug from a very dear friend.
I feel like a fish on dry land but I know, I will dive deep soon and spread my own work in just the same way as you do it.
    Meanwhile: thank you!
A big hug from the other side of the ocean

The possibilities that lie within the unknown. Endless.
Thank you for reminding us what it feels like to knock on, and open, that door.

Floundering at times but glad to be breathing.

  5. Tolis on January 28, 2026 at 3:36 am

    I see it dear Steve.

The soul must enter the kingdom of its huge truths. In there lie so many streams dear Steve, so many streams… I see them – lava, coal, rock, stones, heat, a darkened sky with cracks in it and our sweat blurring our vision. The unknown of the soul alone can absorb our entire life’s energy but we must remember the yin-yang notion, the notion of fullness -for what has meaning, if not that which gets connected to (wo)man, it is magical, and it… third and unescapable.. stays forever?-, that much of that energy must go to the disciplines. THE disciplines. Not magical, but path (let’s hope road) openers to the Ellysian Fields.

My love to you, Diana, our friends here, and all people.

Day 27 complete: My pro habit is: Contrary to sound advice, I am committed to two: Connecting each morning with Muse, and consuming ginger (and/or ginseng) to maintain good energy and health for writing.

Quitting a Job or relationship, being fired or injured physically or emotionally tends to separate us from the present moment or Now which is all there is. Reflecting or obsessing on the past and lost opportunity’s can make one feel that we are on an endless ‘Zeros Journey’. To be still and recognize that all is well, that our heart and respiration carry on without our intention can be reassuring and return us to the flow of imagining the future. There is no Finish line or finite endeavor only the Now, which is sublime. XO

Certainty is a delusion. Nothing is certain. Nothing lasts forever. The only rational way to navigate life is in constant uncertainty.

Its funny that you mention the soul. The first story Inwrote, 3 different scenes later came to pass in real life. Not exactly the same, but close enough to make me think I may have lost my mind. That hasnt happened in quite some time. Havent noticed as many synchronicities in general. Realized that I’ve been so invested in learning the mechanics of writing, in the analytical part of it, that Ive lost the connection to the intuitive parts. The connection to the æther. The soul of it. But the good news is that Im nearing understanding the analytical parts well enough to reconnect with the soul.

I have quit many jobs, some on principle, some for necessity that there is somewhere else to be. my present job is caring for my spouse. There is ALWAYS the outside JOB of some sort to deal with.I have never felt like a fish crawling up on dry land, but wondering how to pay the rent. Presently that is not a problem. I’m a musician/songwriter, and I’ve discovered a wonderful resource/inspiration this week: Victor Wooten, a Bass player who writes like Richard Bach. ( The Music Lesson, The Spirit of Music). I discovered him on a Podcast, and in the comments I discovered his books. Even if you have no interest in Music, if you like Richard Bach, he has much to say about the spiritual in creativity.

And so it begins anew – like the blank page waiting for us to begin the next story/chapter…

    Love this
    Thank you from Ireland

The fish by fulfilling its destiny benefited not only itself but all of its descendants.

It IS otherworldly, isn’t it? And you can’t enter that space at the snap of a finger. Like making love, real love, it takes time.

As a visual artist I’ve studied color theory in a limited way. I took a sculpture class and learned the basics. I have never had real formal training. The plus to that is that my style is my style. The plus is that I FEEL THE COLORS. I FEEL THE EMOTION and that’s the practice. The only time that fails me is when I ignore that spiritual process.

Thinking about that, that connection and the ability to do that, why don’t I consistently do that? Why, if there’s such a gift of connection, don’t I?

There is a present, gift wrapped, and yet sometimes it sits there unopened.

Ray Bradbury wrote several versions of: “First you jump off the cliff and you build your wings on the way down.” Same deal.

Leaving the known and entering the unknown. It’s key to every story, isn’t it?

Eventually, in the Spring, after I watch the robin build its nest, she lays an egg.

Soul work – passed from one being to the next. Thanks Steve.

    You’re a good egg.

When you and I quit a job literally or metaphorically we’re like that fish that crawled onto land… and immediately thought, Wow, rent is expensive out here.

We’re like Rambo, Wonder Woman, or Dorothy except instead of weapons or ruby slippers, we’re armed with Google Docs, imposter syndrome, and a half-charged laptop.
