Inner Weather, Part Two

In the midst of an excruciating breakup a few years ago, I did some of the best writing of my life. A couple of years before that, I faced two life-and-death health issues back-to-back. I finished one book and started another during that time and both were strong and satisfying.

In other words,

There seems to be no correlation between our outer worlds and our inner.

A case might even be made that the relationship is inverse. The worse things are outside, the better they are for our novel, our low-budget film, our revision of Grand Theft Auto IX.

The point for us comes down to self-belief and self-command. The voice of Resistance in our heads will fasten onto any setbacks or tragedies in our external lives and present them to us as excuses to slack off in our artistic dedication.

We must be mindful of this. We must stand ready to dismiss it for the bullshit that it is.

What happens in the real river outside our door means nothing.

The underground river inside us … that’s everything.

DO THE WORK

Steve shows you the predictable Resistance points that every writer hits in a work-in-progress and then shows you how to deal with each one of these sticking points. This book shows you how to keep going with your work.

You are so right. Tough times here, but thanks for these wise words. Just what I needed to get me back to writing.

      Vinny,
A suggestion -go outside in nature, watch, and listen to the whispers. Take a tablet and pen. Wishing you the best.

Potent, powerful, wonderful. I lost my dad, who was also a dear friend, on Aug. 8. I continue to work, knowing pain is part of the process. Thanks for this installment.

My sympathy on the loss of your dad and friend. Been there. It hurts. You will find an okay in time.

    exhibit A: music.
there are a few awesome “top of the world” songs. and the other eighty percent of great stuff is complaint or blatant anguish.

My partner and I went through a horrible ‘rough’ patch last year and in the process became people we couldn’t even recognize. It’s still rocky but getting better bit by bit so we’re working it out thankfully. Steve’s last post is right. You can work during the worst parts of your life. After years of being a successful screenwriter, I decided to sit down, despite our personal problems and write my novel. I would get up at four thirty in the morning, the house was peaceful and I would do my work. Whatever happened after that, my work was done. I would repeat it the next day and then the next. The pages added up, a first draft was written and after a lot of ‘hard’ talks my partner and I are reconnecting and even finding the odd laugh here and there. It’s hard to have a bad day after getting some solid work done. Joe

Thank you for the reminder that is now firmly embedded in me.

The past 6 years have been full of family deaths, a near halt in constructive writing, the initiation of a self-financed village library, structural advancements for that building, and structural roadblocks for that building, all amidst working an on-call job and volunteering in our Friends of the Library bookstore.

That’s my thing in life that brings me joy and hope and fear and tears and dismay and pride.

I wake up in the mornings with Resistance in my face telling me to give up and fail, again, I tell myself today just as when I battled postpartum depression to the nth extreme, “Get through today, tomorrow will be better. Work on one thing on your list as far as you can. That is the accomplished. Not accomplishment. The accomplished. Period. Past tense. Said and done.

    As always, thank you.

    If I may share —

For about a decade at Halloween, our family puts out a Trick-or-Read table of kids’ books (along with candy and s’mores) at our home.
This is our third Trick-or-Read table at a small village lending library we’re starting.

Here are a few of the best responses over the years.

The young daughter of an international Fellow student at a local college:
“I can have these books for FREE? America is GREAT!”

A young boy looking through a stack of Magic Treehouse books:
    “I don’t have THIS one!”
Mom: “Well, keep looking. Maybe you’ll find another one you don’t have.”
Boy: “I don’t have THIS one, either. I don’t know which one to take.”
    Me: “Take them both.”
    Boy: “I can’t do that!”
Me: “Sure you can. Take them both.”
Glaring Boy: “How do YOU know I can take them both?”
Me: “Well, I’m the one who brought them. So, take them both, and any others you want.”

This year, a lot of the kids bypassed the candy and came straight for the books.
Kids start asking in the beginning of October if we’re still giving books.
Parents have told me their kids make them come to our house first because of the books.

*The books come from our Friends of the Library bookstore. The books are all well-read and look it. The kids choose modern and old classic stories.

    Be well. Do good.
