We said in the previous post that athletes train and soldiers train, and that you and I as artists and entrepreneurs have to train as well. But the athlete and the soldier have an advantage over us.
They can work with a coach.
They have a sergeant or a manager to instruct them and praise them, encourage them when they falter or hold their feet to the fire when they slack off. The football player and the Navy SEAL can literally be trained by professionals. Some athletes have entire entourages of coaches and instructors and counselors.
You and I are alone.
We can’t train. We have to self-train.
Steve shows you the predictable Resistance points that every writer hits in a work-in-progress and then shows you how to deal with each one of these sticking points. This book shows you how to keep going with your work.
A short book about the writing of a first novel: for Steve, The Legend of Bagger Vance. Having failed with three earlier attempts at novels, here's how Steve finally succeeded.
NOBODY WANTS TO READ YOUR SH*T
Steve shares his "lessons learned" from the trenches of the five different writing careers—advertising, screenwriting, fiction, nonfiction, and self-help. This is tradecraft. An MFA in Writing in 197 pages.
Amateurs have amateur habits. Pros have pro habits. When we turn pro, we give up the comfortable life but we find our power. Steve answers the question, "How do we overcome Resistance?"

And that’s why I show up here every week. I feel the pull to be held accountable.
Dang. This is what I read as I’m pulling up to my writing desk and pick up my phone and, not wanting to get too distracted, am grateful to see your name in in my inbox and Bang! Exactly the clarity to ring my ears and set me aflame back to my task. The one that only I can keep on track.
Thank you Steven.
How do we train by ourselves? We have to go to the core. Change our consciousness. Know we are connected to the ultimate trainer: Source or God.
Actually one of the things I do at Kevin Anderson & Associates is book coaching, so one doesn’t have to be alone if one has the money, but yea: I wrote my latest novel alone. Only two people even know I wrote, and the second, my agent, didn’t know I had until I sent it to her. I’m curious to see what she thinks because it’s very deliberately not like anything on the market today, although it does follow some trends.
I wholeheartedly agree with the self-training statement. As a person who struggled for years to get beyond a shadow career, I have finally been able to write a draft of a screenplay. All thanks to 3 of Steven’s books, a lot of early morning writing sessions, and the ability to finally have enough discipline through self training to get beyond the tough parts. I still struggle; but now I have more tools to use when I get in the way. The journey continues. Thank-you Steven.
Nearly 20 years ago I worked as the operations officer for recruiting in the Army National Guard. My workout partner and bestie would discuss everything in the world, but mostly recruiting, marketing, etc in the steam room after working daily. At the time, the Guard gave recruiters holographic business card with photos of young men and women in BDUs and civilian garb with a small flick of the wrist.
We had discussed a cards with a Soldier firing from one knee, and an football player in a three-point stance; a Soldier handing out an MRE to a civilian, and a volleyball player doing a bump…we went on and on. Finally I called 1-800-Go-Seahawks, or whatever the main number was and asked, “I doubt it is you, but who do you know at work who might be able to make a commercial with the Army..” About 5 phone calls later, I was in touch with their equivalent of the Public Affairs Officer.
When we met, after discussing what we wanted (a commercial with the Seahawks and our Solders…we had written a pithy little script and idea), the money shot was, “Mike, dude, the truth is everyone in uniform are the same breed of cat. To succeed we behave and train in the same manner. The only difference between a Soldier and an athlete is the uniform and where the name is placed (front or back of uniform).”
The Seahawks made a commercial with us. One of the greatest professional days in my life was to visit the Seahawks HQ with a half-dozen Soldiers to film..and of course all the strap-hangers who followed us up there. A total victory.
All people need to train. One of the most damaging things ever said was by Allen Iverson when he said, “I mean, we’re talking about practice! Practice! I show up for the games…”
I think most here see you as our Coach. While you’re not writing drills on the chalk board, or publishing an OPORD–we all heed your counsel.

Brian! Hi! I’ve (we’ve?) missed seeing you here 😊
We, dear Maureen. Even through osmosis every mand and woman here is important.
Thanks Maureen. I’ve been in and out, but mostly quiet. I’ve thought a lot about the title “Coach” for years. It may be the most important role in young men’s lives. Could be true for women as well, but there is something critical in a young man’s maturation of having an older man who embodies what we aspire to become. Even if, and most of it is, subconscious.
Glad to be back. I’ve missed everyone here.

Thank you very much dear Steve.
I ended the season as a trainer of older people. I immediately got myself to enroll in a gym, because I know that if I train alone, my training will soon shrink to a lazy 50 minutes run, then later 50 minutes fast walk. Ugh.
As for writing, well with no coach and also with people around me trying to sabotage me -tough luck-, I’m lucky to be writing again. I used all my cunning and resources. As you know, the past three years or so I couldn’t face the page again, but I overcame even that. Well, that’s α deed. But it came from cunning and from continuous trying to find the way dear Steve, and not from sheer strength of will or character. I was like Odysseus, not Diomedes nor Achilles or Neoptolemos. I created a web of endeavour that slowly and very indirectly led me there.
So strange a thing.
I’m writing.
My love to you, Diana, the team, the friends.
Good story, Brian… and I think we’d all at your last graph– most of us see Steve as a mentor, coach.
While we are “alone” at the writing desk, we don’t have to be unaided. Steve mentions “self train.” If you cite Steve as your coach– then don’t forget his training materials.. In addition to Steve’s novels (as examples), he truly has provided us with plenty of valuable non-fiction, loaded with advice, but also technical assistance.
Steve’s “Jabs” collection was invaluable here. I recall Steve cleared out the last of his hard copies –and I don’t see a digital version available on the Black Irish site. But those chapters were gold.. Maybe time for a digital “rerelease?”
Thanks, Brad. I agree and have a pretty sizable Coach library myself. The jobs, most non-fiction. Many are on annual relisten or reread schedule.
In fact, The legend of bagger Vance has solidified itself as my all-time favorite.

coaching or training oneself is like losing weight, or body building: very easy to be unrealistic about expectations, especially when you get tangled in what advertisements/hollywood/other people think you should look like.
back to writing AND self promoting, it’s very easy to think you are not doing enough, or that you are doing it all wrong. or that there is zero reader interest in what you write. there exists what i call the spectrum trap: a writer tries contacting three sites daily to promote or push for interviews.
“contacting sites is not working, this is no good, i got ONE whole reply back, which was a rejection”
“how long have you been doing this outreach self-promo?”
“a week” appropriate response = “keep at it”
“four years” appropriate response = “you need to try something different”
aviso: when you try something like “contact three podcasters daily”, mentally plan ahead how long you are going to keep doing that with no results. cos we have to prime the pump, smoothen out our spiel. beginners’ luck is a curse. and if you have it, know that your challenge is still in the pipeline.
the most important part WE have to do is exactly what Mr Steve talks about: consistency. show up every day. do the work.
and with the reach out example: pre plan that you will evaluate six or eight weeks in before deciding something is a failure.
and when you finally DO get someone to talk shop with or even a… MENTOR, you already have something to talk about, something to verbally show, “here’s what i’ve done so far…”
Mr Marvin, thank you!
“How do we train by ourselves? We have to go to the core. Change our consciousness. Know we are connected to the ultimate trainer: Source or God.”
^^ YES!!!
I train by reading the best books on the writing craft while writing as well. Stephen King, On Writing; Anne Lamott; Bird by Bird; Julia Cameron’” The Artist Way and so many more give us an insight look to the best of writers. Their ideas and habits become my playbook and so much more
I have been writing a blog for over the last eight years. From 6 times a week to two and three times a week. Got an inspiration for a book close to two weeks ago and been writing a chapter a day over the last ten days. If don’t write, the resistance will kick our ass.
Yes, but, writing has to be socialized in some way. Beta readers, and editor, a workshop, we need an objective view. But no professional writer does this to motivate them. Either you love the learning, creativity, and problem solving, or you dont.
Steve – You amazing weekly posts are part of our training. Thank you!
Steve – These weekly posts (and your books) are an amazing part of our training. Appreciate you.
As a business coach, I would beg to differ. I work with large business, and I work with entrepreneurs. In each context, whomever I work with is not isolated in their endeavors. I help them create strategy, structure, inspiration, motivation, focus, clarity, accountability, and follow-thru. There is plenty of training involved in this process.
I coach because I have benefited from being coached. I still have a coach. I also have owned two businesses, write, daytrade, and do a zillion other things as well.
In the end, whomever I work with is only successful if they do their work, which is true regardless. Writers are not special in this regard.
Just my two cents:-)
