My first agent was a gentleman named Barthold Fles. He was seventy-six; I was twenty-nine. One day over coffee Bart asked me, “How much is 427 minus one?”
I gave the obvious answer: 426.
“No,” said Bart. “It’s zero.”
He was speaking about pages in a novel.
If the completed book is 427 and you’ve written 426, you haven’t got 426/427ths. You’ve got nothing.
Bart didn’t need to say any more. I went home and got back to work.
Steve shows you the predictable Resistance points that every writer hits in a work-in-progress and then shows you how to deal with each one of these sticking points. This book shows you how to keep going with your work.
A short book about the writing of a first novel: for Steve, The Legend of Bagger Vance. Having failed with three earlier attempts at novels, here's how Steve finally succeeded.
NOBODY WANTS TO READ YOUR SH*T
Steve shares his "lessons learned" from the trenches of the five different writing careers—advertising, screenwriting, fiction, nonfiction, and self-help. This is tradecraft. An MFA in Writing in 197 pages.
Amateurs have amateur habits. Pros have pro habits. When we turn pro, we give up the comfortable life but we find our power. Steve answers the question, "How do we overcome Resistance?"

Inspiring. Thank you.
Haha, very good!
True!
Great story. Back to querying and back to work.
Loved this. No judgment, just the fact. Back to work…
Indeed it is. Thank you 🙏🏼
Shoot.
OK then. So you’re saying finishing can be a real bugger. Heck yes! Thanks for letting me know that I am not alone in not wanting to face my fears. Steven, this is great.
Profoundly simple! Everything we do must pass this very fraction! Great reminder!
Nobody said there would be Math.
S’funny!
Git’ner dunn.
The way we intuitively know when something’s not write, its hard for me to comprehend. My level of skill has been approaching my level of taste and, although I can tell that something I’ve written isn’t correct, I’m not smart enough to know how to fix it without much trial and error. Just intercut several chapters and tried a couple different orders. Finally back to revising with the new structure.
This stuff is hard, but I’m going to feel amazing when its done. For about a day or two, then on to the next story.
The last page awaits me.
It is isolated, trapped in infinity.
It is unshaped.
As alive as the unborn and unconceived.
As dead as everyone who now is.
But it awaits its only saviour.
My love to all, you, Diana!
I’m writing.
There’s art in Bart 😆
Exactly the message I needed in the final stretches…. Thank you for these weekly inspirations. Though I don’t comment much- these little weekly encouragements have been welcome support and I wanted to let you know that. Much appreciated.
This showed up on James Clear’s 3-2-1 list this week. On the same theme:
Writer and illustrator Tim Urban on consistency:
“Something I try to remind myself: someone who is writing three hours a day, five days a week… it’s shocking how much you can produce. Add those weeks together, and 40 weeks later, you have a book.
The difference between the prolific writer and the self-loathing person who doesn’t write anything is one writes 15 hours a week out of their 112 waking hours a week and the other does zero out of 112 waking hours. So 1/7th versus 0/7ths.
6/7ths of those two people’s lives are the same! People who can’t put something together have this daunting assumption that the prolific writer is fundamentally different, they’re working constantly all the time. It doesn’t have to be that way. It’s consistency.”
