Fear of Success Anonymous

This is going to sound like a joke, but I swear it’s true.

I once joined Fear of Success Anonymous, aka FOSA. This was in Los Angeles, so almost all the group members were actors or screenwriters.

The group got so popular it had to disband.

I remember driving home from the final meeting, thinking, “I’ve gotta solve this issue on my own. Fear of Success by definition can never succeed!”

    great punchline!

maybe this suggests that the way to succeed is to try to fail i.e. reverse psychology?

e.g. try to write an absolute stinker of a novel or screenplay that no publisher or studio in their right mind would touch and end up with a bestseller or Oscar nomination?

You just summarized the basic plot spine of “The Producers” LOL

But context and character are important, too, natch…

LOL This is GOLD!!! Failure is where we learn the most, so might as well get to success sooner. Keeping in mind, it takes courage to be a beginner.

Ah, but clearly, you have shown by all accounts that you have succeeded at overcoming fear of failure, victorious in the war of art.

Another timely post for me! I’m just finishing my first project so all of these internal emotional responses to the work are new to me. I am starting to feel confident about it and that is scaring the shit out of me. It was easier to hide behind low expectations. Now I’ve got to own it – good or bad or whatever. Yikes.

The desire to hide ourselves from the world is strong. But i owe stories to the world.

  9. Marla Mitchnick on September 9, 2026 at 4:49 am

@Steve, I shudder to think had the group flourished the War of Art might not exist but still curious to learn what you mean by “The group got so popular it had to disband” ???

Wouldn’t 12 step groups simply get a larger space or break out into multiple meetings?

I always wanted to be a comedian.
    But I didn’t.
I was afraid people would laugh at me

When a fiction writer says “I swear it’s true”, the word apocryphal springs to mind 🙂

Back in the 70’s, Dr. Leon Tec wrote an insightful little book by the same title, “Fear of Success” which I happened to stumble across while I was married to a playwright/aspiring screenwriter, somewhere in the middle of our 25-year marriage. Prior to our relationship, she’d turned down, walked on &/or in some way imploded several “slam dunk,” lucrative deals offered to her from several unrelated sources: one was an international deal with Tiffany & Co to design jewelry (she was also an artist); another, an offer from the Taper Organization to fund, promote & mount her original musical in L.A. before taking it to Broadway. Then, during our marriage, she told a VP of a major studio who phoned me (I was managing her at the time) to congratulate her with the news they were not only buying her show I’d pitched them, but also train her to be a show runner, “No thanks—I don’t want a job; besides, you’d fire me in a week, anyway…” Her fear of success torpedoed yet another major Broadway deal I’d helped negotiate, as well, and I’ve been working at coming back from all that negative karma ever since—Fear of success is deeply rooted in one’s self-esteem, and the only way to alchemies it is to understand what part of oneself doesn’t believe they deserve success.

Thank you very much dear Steve.

Fear of success, I guess, must be not that much of a specific fear but only a manifestation of the wide spectrum of fear in general.

We may fear many things, and the fear is the real problem, not what fear focuses on. One who fears to face an unjust and derogatory spouse, possibly fears facing the blank page too. Though I will add here that one must also know the Way – so there are two parameters as far as I can think: surpassing the fear (better yet, finding a way to be elsewhere from fear’s lair) and knowing the Way to do what you must do.

These months as I told you I’m writing the book every morning. In this period, I am indifferent to fear and I have also found a way that works almost like a clock.

I would also add that the Muse perhaps gave me some more time to finish the book: I wasn’t hired for my new job now, but I was delayed for a few weeks, so that I can add these last touches in the book. But I saw both the Muse and the Dark Muse lately. I saw that there is a Dark Muse who kills your hopes. She makes you believe like a believer, and then you are destroyed because you only eat dirt and all hope disappears. So I won’t bring the Muse to the table.

Indifference to fear and a way to do what you must.

My love to you, Diana, the team, the friends.

    I’m writing.

P.s. as I said on the post on the beautiful conversation with the great musician that you had, I don’t consider the way I found to write the book as the final answer for all my creative life. I will finish the book using that way, but like everything in life, that way will have drained itself and myself until then. I will have to change again.

    That’s so funny!
Spending time with others who have low energy and mood is not a great way to uplift your mood and show a fighting spirit. It would have the opposite effect.

Fear of success is really about avoiding uncomfortable feelings suppressed by ego, and using the lens of ego to control the narrative by projecting fear into the equation. Real success is simply shedding the mask of ego, by doing/creating from a place of love instead. Our ego talks us into being afraid of love, and thriving in fear. Since our natural state is love, the entire exercise of being held hostage by fear of success/our egos is actually quite silly. One can only understand this, however, by getting outside of ego.
